Paragraphing

Some Tips on Writing Paragraphs     How do I do it?

A paragraph is identified when a line has been missed out in the writing.  Paragraphs are used to group ideas together in a piece of writing, to make it easier for the reader to keep their place, to understand and take in all the ideas the writer is trying communicate.

Time
If the order of events jumps in time then start a new paragraph.  Eg.  The next morning

Idea
The introduction of new or different ideas is a good time to start a new paragraph.

Pace
This is when excitement might be building and things could be speeding up or slowing down.  Eg.  Suddenly

Topic or Theme
You change the topic you are talking about. This change of direction is a good time for a new paragraph.

Person
When a new person becomes involved or is introduced then that’s often a good time to start a new paragraph.

Picture in your head!
If you’re writing and can imagine all these things going on in your head and the picture changes then this is the time to use a new paragraph too.
